A Change of Seasons

“It was 85 last week and now it’s 40!”

Welcome to winter.

Did we have a fall?

You be the judge!

The close of one season includes the beginning of others.

Winter wheat was planted earlier this month.

While other fields were put to bed.

Harvest during November

included gathering pecans

from trees planted by my

husband’s grandfather.

I can already taste these pecans roasted with some light salt! Yum.

As we head toward Thanksgiving the last chores are being wrapped up.

Wildlife is active and seems to relish these cooler temperatures.

Every season has its gifts.

It has also been a busy month with whole soy food taste tests conducted at McCrory High School on November 15th and 16th.

Students tasted vegetable soybean dishes across the menu, including roasted soy nuts, soy hummus and carrots, black soybean salsa, soybeans and rice, and soy bread pudding. It was a great opportunity to learn from these students’ perspectives!

As I consider all the Thanksgiving meals shared on this farm, I am grateful for the sacrifices made to produce food, feed, and fuel for 95 years.

At one point, everything the family ate was grown or raised on the farm.

Local foods are not a new concept after all!

May I recommend some Soylicious® pumpkin hummus for your holiday menu?

Check out the recipe here.

Wishing you all a healthy and blessed Thanksgiving.

~Karen

P.S. November snapshots are provided below.

Some plants seem to thrive in the cooler temperatures.
